#9 Worldbuilding

A fantasy world

In this episode of WHO WOULD ZAINABB SMASH? a giant hole is dug and then we talk about worldbuilding. What worlds are good worlds? Where would we want to live? All this and lots of nervous laughter in today’s ramshackle episode!

2:22 ‘Nam Saying G

We went to see Stand By Me, one of Zainabb’s favourite films and now a firm fave for Dziugas, too.

Zainabb finished Dragon Age: Inquisition and talks about disappointing romances and perpetually making bad life decisions. Zainabb’s also gone to see David Lynch: The Art Life and has an update on Twin Peaks feels.

Dziugas is excited for the new Hearthstone expansion and has also been listening to The Adventure Zone. We also briefly chat about the upcoming Heathers remake.

44:23 Worldbuilding

We talk about what worldbuilding is and different types of worlds, from ones set in our own world (like with superheroes) to those just apart (like Harry Potter) to more fantastical worlds and barely comprehensible ones, like Middle-Earth or Twin Peaks.

#8: Living Vicariously Through Characters

Living Vicariously through Characters

We were prepared for an Angry Episode but instead things got better, Zainabb got emotional, and we had a haphazard discussion about living vicariously through characters.

1:41 ‘Nam Saying G

We watched Baby Driver and WHOO, BOY was it a raging hellfire.

Zainabb also watched The OA which has been helping her through a tough time, and Dziugas has been playing Baldur’s Gate like a badass.

36:00 Living Vicariously Through Characters

In our clunkiest topic title yet, we struggle to find characters that we feel like we can “live vicariously through” and maybe we just relate to our faves instead. We chat about how characters can provide a safe outlet for power fantasies and how The Sims is the ultimate in living vicariously.

The Nicathon Highlight Reel

Nicolas Cage in City of Angels

Listen to the highlights from THE NICATHON. We watch (and rip into) Nic Cage classics like City of Angels, Face/Off, and The Rock (a Michael Bay film that also has Sean Connery in it – but Zainabb keeps forgetting this.)

Weird dialogue! Nic Cage’s face! Lesbians! Lateral moves! And really low bars! Follow along as we try to maintain grip on our sanity over six hours of Nicolas Cage movies.

If you want to speak to us, sympathise, or tell us your opinions, you can tweet at us @SpaceWizardsPod or email us via our website spacewizardscast.com. You can also @ZainabbHull and @DziugasMatas if you’re really hardcore.

#7: The Nicathon

THE NICATHON - Nicolas Cage in Face/Off

THE NICATHON is here. We watched a bunch of Nicolas Cage films in a row and tried to understand them. Is he good, bad, or not even a real human being? We ask the big questions (about Nicolas Cage) in this special episode.

1:37 ‘Nam Saying G

Zainabb volunteered with some teens this week and struggles to express the unique kind of joy this brings her. She also watched Kedi, a Turkish film about cats, and struggles to contain her excitement about it.

Meanwhile, Dziugas thinks he hates The Killing, an American remake about a Scandidrama about a murder. He’s also been reading Ed Brubaker’s Captain America (including The Winter Soldier) and having Cap feels.

45:14 The Nicathon

We chat about City of Angels, Face/Off, The Rock, and The Wicker Man before discussing whether Nicolas Cage is an actor or just an abstract concept designed to free our minds.

#6: Why Does Pop Culture Matter?

Pulp Fiction - Uma Thurman Drinking Milkshake

Who’s ready for an EXTRA SPECIAL ACCIDENTAL BUMPER EDITION of Space Wizards?!?! In today’s episode, we spend a good while talking about all the stuff that matters to us: society, compassion, the world, and pop culture.

We chat about communism, society, and the world before asking why we care about pop culture. What power does it hold over individuals and society? What do we get out of it – or what should we? And how can pop culture help us? Listen in to our jibber jabber in episode 6.

2:03 ‘Nam Saying G

Dziugas is watching Glow, a Netflix show about female wrestling steeped in ’80s sleaze.

Zainabb went to see White Lies, a New Zealand film about Maori identity, motherhood, and survival.

Zainabb also went to the Russian Revolution exhibit at the British Library so you can hear us chat about communism, power, nationalism, what people want from their leaders, fear, terrorism, Islamophobia, and the way we use language to discuss violence. We also talk about media coverage of violence and media coverage in general.

1:09:08 Why Does Pop Culture Matter?

We ask what is pop culture? What does it do, why does it matter, and how can it affect us? We look at how our media can influence society (and vice versa) and how this impacts power dynamics in the real world. We also chat about the ways in which stories can help us in difficult times.

E3 Special

Spiderman looks out onto the city

In this special episode (that was supposed to be a mini-episode but nah mate) we cover E3 – video games! Consoles! Social issues! We’ve got it all.

In this episode, we chat VR games (including the announcements of Fallout and Skyrim VR), pirate simulators, couch co-op, Anthem and how its trailer seems to think gamers speak, and we look at what Quantic Dream will probably get hideously wrong with their latest title, Detroit: Become Human.

#5: Dystopian Narratives

SPACE WIZARDS ARE WATCHING YOU.

Nah, not really, we’re just talking about dystopian narratives in our latest episode. Why do we create and read dystopian narratives? What should we be taking away from these stories and what impact can they have in the real world? What’s with all those YA dystopias? All this and more in episode 5.

2:36 ‘Nam Saying G

Dziugas went to see Wonder Woman and has feels about it, whilst Zainabb’s been watching The Get Down and has feels about it.

We also chat about the 2017 UK General Election because Corbyn is the absolute boy.

30:08 Dystopian Narratives

We explore why we create and consume dystopias, like V For Vendetta, The Hunger Games, and the OG 1984. Why does YA fiction favour dystopias? What do we take from these stories back into the real world, if anything? And we discuss the importance of paying attention to real-life marginalised experiences in the present, which frequently align with western ideas of dystopian “futures.”

#4: Video Game Adaptations

Street Fighter film

Our fourth episode is basically an excuse to watch the Street Fighter film. This time, we’re chatting video game adaptations. Why do video games get adapted into films – and why is it always so bad? What should video game adaptations be doing better? We chat all of this PLUS Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in our latest episode.

CW: transphobia, misogyny

2:57 ‘Nam Saying G

We’ve been watching Twin Peaks so we discuss just how Lynchian it all is alongside our disappointment at the show’s representation (which is still stuck in 1990.)

Zainabb’s been reading Hellblazer and wanting to live that British occult detective life, and then we chat about Wicked, which is about fascism.

39:59 Video Game Adaptations

Why Street Fighter is so delightful but Doom is boring af, even with Karl Urban AND Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Zainabb made someone mad with her running commentary of Silent Hill, and just what the heck is up with Uwe Boll. We discuss why video game adaptations aren’t very good, what they could do better, and why cinema needs to move away from the image of gamers as gross teenage boys.

#3: Twin Peaks

Welcome to Twin Peaks

*TWIN PEAKS THEME MUSIC*

It’s here! Our bumper-sized Twin Peaks episode (almost definitely the first of many) where we lose our shit over David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult classic TV show. How does Twin Peaks represent Lynch as an artist? Which themes are we gonna read into the show? And what does Twin Peaks have to say about women? All this and more in our third episode!

2:57 ‘Nam Saying G

Dziugas has been consuming Riverdale, DMing Dungeons and Dragons (for the first time ever!)

Zainabb is living that Mad Men life, reading Nimona, and cringing at the sex scenes in The Handmaiden. We also mention I Kill Giants.

31:49 Twin Peaks

We chat “Twin Peaks as media” and “Twin Peaks as narrative” with some squeeing over Special Agent Dale Cooper, David Lynch, and some feminist discourse thrown in.

1:54:44 Byeeeeeeeeeeee

What’s up next time, and an extra-special after-credits sting, courtesy of me being really really ill.

#2: Sequels

Terminator 2

Do you get it? In the follow-up to our pilot episode, we’re chatting sequels. What makes a good sequel? Why do so many sequels seem to fail at this? And what are the best sequels ever made – and what about the ones that didn’t get made?

All this and more in Space Wizards #2! We cover T2, Aliens, The Fast and the Furious, trilogies, and more. We also chat about the stuff we’ve been doing recently, including watching Atlanta, Better Call Saul, and Girlboss, reading American Vampire, and playing Hearthstone and Diablo II.

Got a question or want to join in on the discussion? Contact us on our website or get in touch on Twitter @SpaceWizardsPod OR @ZainabbHull OR @DziugasMatas – or all three, if you’re super hardcore.
